Bark, Bark??

Today’s question is: Why on earth do dogs bark like crazy when a train sounds it’s horn???

Background: We have several dogs in the neighborhood. It seems that two households of them like to howl. Every single time the local commuter rail sounds it’s horn (why does it have to do that??) those dogs start howling. My goodness it sounds like they are dying when they howl. It’s horrible. I wish I had a recording of it so you all could understand the sound I get to hear several times a day.

Makes me wonder what they’d sound like if they were actually dying. I hope I’m not around for that.

But really, can’t you train a dog out of howling at the sound of a horn?? Man I wish you could.

  1. You could go over there with a spray bottle and spray ‘em in the face everytime they start howling… Bahaha – I’d like to see that!

  2. I am guessing it is a pitch-sensory thing.
    It just hits them in a painful awful way. Is it all dogs or just those two? i guessing it is just some dogs.

  3. …I’m guessin’ it hurts their ears. Dogs hear so much better than we do and their hearing is sensitive to high pitch whistles and such, did you ever hear a dog whistle? Not an actual dog puckerin’ up and whistlin’ mind you but one of those whistles that dog trainers use? lol… We can barely hear it if at all but a dog sure can hear it.

    …Anyway, that’s my theory and I’m stickin’ to it! ;o)

    …Poor dogs and well, poor you too. Just throw ‘em a bone or give ‘em some beer…lol

  5. You know I never even thought they those dogs ears could be hurt by the train horn. interesting. That would make sense based on the painful howl that they make. yeah, poor dogs. Not so poor me, it’s not the end of the world having a few dogs sound like they are dying a few times a day. I’m kinda sad for those guys now, yikes.
