picture memory?
Today’s question is: Why is it that something simple can turn into something so profound?
Background: I was reading an article the other day that jarred a memory. Actually, the story was vaguely similar to something I experienced. Here’s the story:
Now if you get a chance click on the link to the actual story above and read the comments. Lisa added two comments and the second one gives more detail which is really quite remarkable (especially to the story about not compromising on your photos, which is not part of my story at all).
Anyway, this story, about the dad and child and last photo this is what jarred my memory. In May of 2006, I had decided to take pictures of each of the girls in our brownie troop. It was our first year in brownies and I thought it would be fun to ‘watch them grow’. I have a love for super close ups as you can see here. I took each girl aside and took her picture that day. I was the only one who ever saw them, my plan was to share the pictures at the beginning of the new school year.
During that summer, the daughter of one of my co-leaders, was killed while camping in a terrible storm that blew through their campsite. I had been out of town when I got the news and I just knew I had the perfect picture of her at home, a picture I planned to share as soon as I could.
Now this picture captured the girl perfectly. It captured her glow, her sparkle, her enthusiasm toward life. It captured her.
I showed up to give my condolences with the picture in tow. My friend had never taken a picture quite like it. She had no pictures that captured her precious girl in the same way. As a result, my picture was blown up and sat on the alter at her memorial. My picture hangs in their house in a special spot to this day. My picture is so much who she was.
The thing is, you never know when the one little thing you do can have a profound impact on someone somewhere. This picture, it captured something, something I had no way of knowing would be so important.
Sometimes it’s the simple things in life that make the true difference.

It wasn't just the picture, it was the thoughtfulness and act of kindness that was appreciated.

You are such an amazing person – even when you don't know it. It's one of the things I adore about you.

colette, you were the person meant to take that picture. you are always giving to others without hesitation…and just reading your post today had me in tears as well. i remember that story very well, we had just moved here. i've been telling my husband for months i want a new camera because i, like you, love the close ups, love the little snapshots into our kids lives, and they are growing up SO FAST. thank you for sharing a truly unforgettable and beautiful story.
